VALLEY CITY (AP) -- A man stole a pickup and dragged a dog that was tied to the vehicle for nearly a mile before stopping and releasing the animal, authorities and witnesses said.

Authorities said they did not know whether the driver knew the dog was being dragged. The black Lab had jumped out the back of the truck but was still tied to the vehicle, they said. The dog was found so severely injured it had to be euthanized.

The truck became disabled and the driver abandoned it beside the road in the Wednesday night incident, authorities said. They found David Reid, 25, of Tampa, Fla., walking down a road and arrested him on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and driving under suspension.

A woman and two children with Reid were given a ride into Valley City, the Barnes County Sheriff's Department said.
