BISMARCK (AP) -- A man has been ordered to serve 10 years in prison for severely beating an 18-month-old child he was baby-sitting on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.
Lawrence Robin Finley was sentenced in federal court earlier this week after pleading guilty in February to assault resulting in serious bodily injury to a minor.
Prosecutors said Finley struck the child several times after the child started crying. The victim required emergency surgery and was hospitalized for weeks with injuries to the stomach, chest and head, including a serious brain injury, court documents show.
Finley's conduct was "extremely barbaric, heinous, cruel and brutal to the innocent 18-month-old victim," U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland wrote.
