BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- A proposed constitutional amendment would overhaul how North Dakota's legislative districts are drawn every 10 years.
North Dakota's League of Women Voters advocates the change. It would put an eight-member independent commission in charge of legislative redistricting. Now, the Legislature does the job.
North Dakota judges would choose seven commission members. The eighth would be picked by a panel of state lawmakers and the chairman of the University of North Dakota's geography department.
North Dakota now has 47 legislative districts. Each one is represented by two House members and a senator.
The amendment petition needs almost 26,000 petition signatures by Aug. 4 to get on the November ballot.
