BISMARCK (AP) -- The Army Corps of Engineers is holding three public meetings in North Dakota this week as it prepares to study the authorized purposes of the Missouri River system.
The meetings are Wednesday in Williston, Thursday in Bismarck and Friday in Fargo. They are among numerous meetings being held in several states to help shape the study.
Congress earlier ordered the study, which will compare modern uses of the river's dams and reservoirs to those that were authorized by the federal Flood Control Act of 1944: flood control, hydropower, water supply, irrigation, navigation, recreation, water quality, and fish and wildlife.
The study is expected to take several years. Any change in the authorized purposes of the reservoirs could be made only by Congress.
