BISMARCK -- North Dakota lawmakers' pay raises should be the same percentage rate granted to state employees, a committee decided Monday.

The Legislative Compensation Commission voted on the proposal after seeing a similar trend in recent years.

The potential increase would apply to both lawmakers' daily session pay and interim meeting daily pay. Both rates are now $141 and will increase to $148 on July 1.

Legislators also receive monthly compensation, which will increase to $415 starting July 1. The commission did not increase that rate or the rates granted to legislative leaders and chairmen.

The commission presented its recommendation to another group of lawmakers meeting Monday. Rep. Al Carlson, R-Fargo, said it would be easier to tie lawmakers' raises to those of state employees.

However, he said there have been questions over the years if that may influence how lawmakers vote on state employees' raises.

The pay raise recommendation would need to be approved by lawmakers during the 2011 session before taking effect.
