N.D. lawmakers reject $500K for geriatric research

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- North Dakota lawmakers have turned down Minot State University's request for $500,000 to develop a geriatric research center.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- North Dakota lawmakers have turned down Minot State University's request for $500,000 to develop a geriatric research center.

Minot State wanted the money from North Dakota's "centers of excellence" initiative. Critics said the program is intended to develop technology and create jobs -- not to finance a new campus research program.

Opponents of the request said similar research is already going on at other North Dakota colleges.

The North Dakota Legislature's interim Budget Section committee rejected the program on Tuesday when it deadlocked in a 19-19 vote.

The committee approved two other technology development programs at North Dakota State University.
