BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- The North Dakota Legislature's Republican majority leaders say there shouldn't be a link between legislative pay and salary increases for state workers.

An advisory board on legislative pay says North Dakota lawmakers should give themselves the same pay raises that state employees get.

House Republican majority leader Al Carlson of Fargo says state lawmakers should vote separately on their pay increases.

Senate Republican majority leader Bob Stenehjem of Bismarck says he doesn't want the impression that lawmakers support state worker pay raises just to give themselves an increase.

In recent years, legislative pay increases have been slightly smaller than those given to state workers.
