BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- An inmate at the North Dakota state penitentiary tried unsuccessfully to break out over the weekend.

Prison officials say 42-year-old Charles Beeney tried to escape Friday night. Beeney is serving a five-year sentence for stealing a pickup near Wahpeton and breaking out of the Richland County jail.

Beeney's prison term was ending July 17.

Prison spokesman Tim Tausend says the prison was locked down until 5:30 p.m. Sunday. North Dakota Highway Patrol Capt. Eric Pederson says the patrol is investigating the attempted escape.

Tausend and Pederson wouldn't discuss details of the attempted escape on Monday. Pederson said Beeney still had to get through "several layers of security" to get out.
