Duluth mayor not seeking re-election

DULUTH — Ending months of speculation, Duluth Mayor Don Ness has announced he will not seek a third term in office.

“I’m convinced this is the right decision for me and my family and the community,” he said in an interview the Duluth News Tribune.

“There are times when the job can weigh heavily, and I don’t want that to be a barrier to my relationship with my kids. More importantly, I want to take full advantage of my family time while the kids are young,” he said.

Ness and his wife, Laura, are the parents of three children: Eleanor, 9, James, 7, and Owen, 3.

Ness’s career plans are unclear, though he said he plans to stay in Duluth.

“I think the prospect of working in the private sector is very compelling,” he said.

Earlier this year, Ness completed work on a master’s degree in management from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth.

His plans don’t currently include a run for higher office.

“I think there is a very high likelihood that this will be the last political office that I hold,” he said.
