Ride raises money for soldier's family

GENESEO, N.D. (AP) -- Organizers say 162 riders participated in a lawnmower caravan from here to Cayuga and back to raise money for the family of a Wahpeton soldier killed in Iraq.

Geneseo Bar and Cafe owner Jeff Mund said Sunday's event raised about $5,000 for the family of Army Staff Sgt. David Kuehl, who was killed by a roadside bomb in May. Mund said the money will go to Kuehl's daughters, Kiley and Messa.

"When the girls get old enough, they'll be able to see how many people supported their dad," Mund said.

It was the second year of the 12-mile round-trip event. Last year's run drew 68 riders and raised about $2,000 for a Cayuga breast cancer survivor, Mund said.

The mowers were counted by a notary and videotaped for submission to the Guinness Book of World Records. No record currently exists, Mund said.

Rose Lee Harff, 62, of Cayuga, said she was inspired to participate by her grandson's safe return from Iraq. She also said it would be her first world record.

"I'll make history before I go," she said.
