PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- State government ended its recent budget year spending less than projected from a reserve fund.

Revenue for the year was $13.9 million more than expected at the same time that state agencies spent $1.4 million less than was budgeted, the Bureau of Finance and Management reported on Thursday. There was another gain of $1.1 million in unspent special appropriations and contract carry-overs.

As a result, the government needed $4.9 million from a reserve fund to balance the books -- not the $8.3 million that was projected just a few months ago when the Legislature adjourned, the bureau said.

In the fiscal 2006 budget, state government withdrew $35.4 million from reserves.

Increased revenue in the past budget year came in spite of a drought and wildfires in 2006 and storms and flooding in eastern South Dakota early this spring, officials said.
