MINOT, N.D. (AP) -- The speed limit on U.S. Highway 83 has been lowered near Minot Air Force Base in an effort to improve safety and traffic flow.
The drop from 70 mph to 55 mph applies to a two-mile stretch of the highway between the base's two gates. Base spokeswoman Laurie Arellano (AW'-ree AW'-noh) says the base leadership supports the speed reduction.
A state Transportation Department study found that vehicles made 4,500 turns at the two base gates in a 16-hour period.
