ST. PAUL - The speed limit on many Wisconsin interstate highways and on Interstate 94 from the I-494/694 split in Woodbury to the Wisconsin border went up to 70 mph from 65 mph Wednesday.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation said a recent study of I-94 crash rates, driving speeds and the freeway’s physical attributes, such as shoulder widths and access points, found that increasing the speed limit to 70 mph was appropriate for the 9-mile stretch.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation began installing updated speed limit signs Tuesday.
About 810 miles of Wisconsin interstates and highways will have speed limits increased to 70 mph from the current 65 mph. All signs were expected to be in place Wednesday.
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker signed into law last month the measure that allows the DOT to decide which highways can post increased speeds.
