Twenty piano and guitar students of Jamestown teacher Joann Herman participated in the 2016 North Dakota Federation of Music Club Junior Music Festival Feb. 27 at Foss Hall on the Valley City State University campus.
Sixty students from southeast-central North Dakota participated in the event. The Junior Music Festival is designed for all members of the National Federation of Music Club. The rules are set by the National Federation of Music Clubs and all Festivals are administered by the respective state Federation of Music Clubs.
Steven Schmitz and Jada Walter earned 15-point trophies in the piano solo event. Schmitz, Walter and Elliot Wiley earned 15-point trophies in the hymn playing event.
Other students who participated in the piano solo event were Ian Lere, Calli Lynch, Devin Manson, Nadia Netolicky, Grace and Lydia Odenbach, Katie Schmitz, Sofia Williams, Shaniah and Shaylie Zorn. Other students who played in the hymn-playing event were Grace Odenbach and Gus Wiley.
Addison Marker, Monica and Rachel Ripplinger and Emma Wiley participated in the piano duet event. Kylie Zorn played in the patriotic and folk song event, and Luke Marker played in the pick-style guitar solo event.
The gold cup program, sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs, encompasses many events and encourages long-term study of music and dance. Students receive participation certificates, a rating and judges’ comments based solely on their individual performances. The highest rating a student may earn in one year is five points. Gold cups are awarded every 15 points. Students may perform in more than one event.
