Two people were injured Monday after the car they were driving hit a cow, according to the Stutsman County Sheriff's Office.

Derek Rumer, 17, 309 Fourth Ave. S.E., was driving a 1992 Honda. He was en route to Jamestown, traveling south on U.S. Highway 52. He attempted to brake to avoid hitting a cow, but couldn't stop in time, deputies said. The cow was killed and came to rest in the roadway. The Honda was totaled.

Herbert Kestler, 48, Apple Valley, Minn., was driving a 2003 Chevrolet passenger car on U.S. Highway 52 shortly after Rumer. He was en route from Canada to his home.

Kestler told officials he was noticed a vehicle parked in the road with its flashers on, so he moved into the passing lane where he struck the cow lying in the road. The Chevrolet was damaged and came to rest in the roadway.

Kestler and his passengers, Barbara Kestler, 49, and Katrina Kestler, 20, both Apple Valley, Minn., were transported to Jamestown Hospital.
