Cold morning in Jamestown
Cold weather has stopped many activities in the Jamestown area after temperatures dropped to 33 below zero Wednesday morning.
National Weather Service forecasts call for continued cold weather with a high of 17 below zero Wednesday and lows near minus 27 on Wednesday night.
The temperature extremes are below average but not near records for Jan. 30 in Jamestown. The record low for the day is 40 below zero set in 1918 and the lowest high temperature is minus 27 set in 1893.
The cold prompted the Jamestown Sanitation Department to postpone Wednesday garbage and recycling routes to Thursday. There is also no mail delivery, schools are closed and many businesses remain closed Wednesday due to the cold.
The forecast calls for a gradual warming trend with weekend temperatures near 20 degrees in the Jamestown area. The forecast also includes a chance of snow Sunday night.
