Benjamin Zuther has been awarded the $500 Shyler James Harr Memorial Scholarship. Zuther plans on attending the University of Jamestown where he will study criminal justice.
One $500 scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating senior from the Pingree-Buchanan High School in honor of Shyler Harr’s memory. Harr, who was 15, died Sept. 26, 2010, as a result of a car accident north of Jamestown. The same accident also took the life of his best friend, Chance DeCoteau, also 15.
Harr’s scholarship is awarded to a senior who is pursuing a degree at a two- or four-year college or university. The award is given on first preference to a senior who is pursuing a career as a highway patrolman or another field of law enforcement because that was the profession Harr was planning to enter. Seniors must also include a personal statement describing their future plans, in addition to an essay titled, “The Importance of Road Safety: Emphasizing Driving Awareness, Defensive Driving, and the Use of Seat Belts.”
Zuther is the son of Jason and Michelle Zuther of Buchanan.
