SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A second South Dakota child has died with COVID-19 as the number of active COVID-19 cases in the state urged to a new all-time high, according to the South Dakota Department of Health on Tuesday, Jan. 18.
The death of the child under age 10 is the second child fatality reported in the past week, and only the second in South Dakota since the pandemic began. The state's death toll now is 2,560, state health officials reported. The active cases, which compared new positive cases to new recoveries, climbed nearly 2,000 to 28,813 on Tuesday.
The day's reported hospitalizations slipped slightly from their highest point since December 2020, falling one to 348 people in South Dakota hospitals with COVID-19.
The following are the state Department of Health COVID-19 case rates, deaths, hospitalizations and vaccinations tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as of Tuesday. All data are the latest available but should be considered preliminary and could be updated at a later date by health officials.
