SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Over half of the state's population is now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, as the resurgent virus claimed another five South Dakotans, state and federal health officials reported Friday, Sept. 10.

There are 442,795 South Dakotans now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, or 50.1% of the state's total population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Just over 57% of the state's population, 507,403 people, have gotten at least an initial vaccine shot, the CDC reported.

About 12,000 South Dakotans have been fully vaccinated in the past two weeks as a renewed COVID-19 surge continues its rise.

The South Dakota Department of Health reported five additional COVID-19 fatalities on Friday, pushing the state's pandemic death toll to 2,084.

State health officials also reported a total of 7,030 active cases of COVID-19 in the state. The number of those who have tested positive and are considered still able to transmit the virus has doubled in the past two weeks, hitting a total not seen since the end of last year.
