SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The number of South Dakota COVID-19 active cases has dropped to nearly a month-long low, reported the South Dakota Department of Health Friday, Oct. 8.

State health officials reported 6,589 active cases in the state, down about 1,300 cases from the recent high of 7,927 on Sept. 20. The active case count measures newly reported cases against recovered cases, so a declining trend indicates the current COVID-19 surge is slowing.

However, the state's chronically high test positivity rate indicates there are likely many cases that are going untested and unreported.

One additional South Dakota has died with COVID-19, raising the number of people in the state who have died while sick with the virus to 2,171.

Hospitalizations remained at 213, with 17 newly reported hospitalizations. There have been a daily census of about 200 people hospitalized with COVID-19 across the state since late August.
