SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — After nearly a month of COVID-19 recoveries outnumbering new infections in the Rushmore State, new infections out-tallied persons recovering, according to data released by the South Dakota Department of Health, on Wednesday, Oct. 20, potentially upending a declining fall surge.

The number of new positive cases notched 466 on Wednesday, outpacing the 420 recoveries across the state. Meanwhile, hospitalizations due to the virus also ticked up to 200 persons, up five from the previous day. Overall, nearly 1 out of 4 ICU beds are occupied by a COVID-19 patient.

The following are the state Department of Health COVID-19 case rates, deaths, hospitalizations and vaccinations tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as of Wednesday. All data is the latest available but should be considered preliminary and could be updated at a later date by health officials.

Vaccinations

  • INITIAL DOSE ADMINISTERED (IF 2-DOSE VACCINE): 539,913 people, 61% of state's population*

  • FULLY VACCINATED: 467,712 people, 52.9% of state's population
