SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — South Dakota's fall COVID-19 surge had slumped since peaking in late September. But the surge appears to have essentially plateaued, with active case counts dropping only a few dozen a day over the past week, according to the South Dakota Department of Health, Monday, Oct. 25.

There were 5,625 active COVID-19 cases in the state on Monday, down significantly from the Sept. 20 peak of 7,927, but down less than 200 cases in the past week.

The active cases count measures the number of new COVID-19 cases against recoveries. That comparison is a rough tracking measure of the surge, although the state's high test positivity rate indicates there are likely many cases that are going untested and unreported.

Monday brought better news on the hospitalization front, with 179 people hospitalized in South Dakota with COVID-19, down from the running average of about 200 hospitalizations.

State health officials on Monday reported two additional South Dakotans had died from COVID-19, raising that count since the beginning of the pandemic to 2,220. While new COVID-19 cases have slowed, reports of fatalities have picked up, with 78 reported so far in October.
