SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Eight additional South Dakotans have died with COVID-19 while active cases have dropped, the South Dakota Department of Health reported Tuesday, Oct. 26.
The newly reported fatalities raise the toll of South Dakotans who have died with COVID-19 to 2,228. Active cases dropped about 4% to 7,704 -- a more significant drop than the recent daily average. A downward trend indicates the latest COVID-19 surge is subsiding, although South Dakota's chronically high test positive rate means many of those sick with COVID-19 are going untested and unreported.
The following are the state Department of Health COVID-19 case rates, deaths, hospitalizations and vaccinations tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as of Tuesday. All data is the latest available but should be considered preliminary and could be updated at a later date by health officials.
