Northeastern ND high school girls basketball coach dies unexpectedly

Craig Brenner

PEMBINA, N.D.—Craig Brenner, the head girls basketball coach at North Border High School, died unexpectedly Monday.

Cause of death hasn't been determined.

"He was out shoveling snow and came into his house, not feeling well,'' North Border athletic director Lee Beattie said. "He died at his home. It was very unexpected.''

Brenner, 61, was in his second year of teaching at North Border-Pembina. He was a junior high football and basketball coach in his first year at the school. This year, he was assistant varsity football coach as well as head girls basketball coach. He also officiated baseball in the spring.

"Craig was a great guy, one of those guys who would do anything for you or the school,'' Beattie said. "We had an opening (for head girls basketball coach) this year and it was getting down to crunch time to fill it. He told us he would be interested. We gave it to him and he did a very nice job.

"Craig was an old-school coach. He told it like it is. He had the girls' respect.''

School was closed Monday due to inclement weather and the start was delayed two hours Tuesday. Beattie said a counselor was available at the school when students arrived.

"It's been a tough day at school,'' Beattie said. "The kids have been very emotional. Craig was very well respected and well liked.''
