Bravo to Sensory Garden project

The Jamestown Sun hands out these bravos this week:

*Bravo to the recovery of the ‘Wizard of Oz’ ruby slippers stolen more than 10 years ago. The slippers, on loan to the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minn., from owner Michael Shaw, were stolen in August 2005. The FBI announced this week that they had been recovered but few other details. The pair is one of only four pairs still in existence that were worn by Judy Garland during the 1939 movie.

*Bravo to the return of the quiet zone in Jamestown. Trains had been sounding their horns following a June 25 accident that damaged a pedestrian maze installed as part of the quiet zone equipment on First Avenue. The custom railing for the maze on the east side of the street near the railroad tracks was completed and installed on Aug. 30. Once the work was confirmed, the trains stopping sounding horns.

*Bravo to Bismarck and Fargo, N.D., and Sioux Falls, S.D., for being ranked by a financial website as being among the best cities in the U.S. to raise a family. Bismarck was ranked No. 5, Fargo No. 7 and Sioux Falls No. 8 by

*Bravo to the Jamestown Sensory Garden project, which has taken shape this summer in Solien-Denault Park near Hillcrest Municipal Golf Course. The garden was designed to stimulate people’s senses and be accessible to all people, who are encouraged to touch the plants to feel their texture as well as view them. The work, still in progress, is a project of the Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department, Jamestown City Beautification Committee, Freedom Resource Center and Anne Carlsen Center.

*Bravo to North Dakota having the highest percentage of middle and high schools with salad bars. A recent Forum News Service story said that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report lists North Dakota as leading all other states when it comes to school salad bars. The state has 91 percent of middle and high schools offering salad bars; the next highest state to do so was Vermont, with 86 percent.
