JHS girls sixth at Legacy Invite

Kyra Vogel paced the Jamestown High School girls golf team Tuesday at the Bismarck Legacy Invite.

The sophomore shot one stroke off her season best at 17-over-par 89, helping the Jays place sixth of nine teams at 389. Bismarck Century flexed its muscle, running away with top team honors by 20 strokes over Williston at 321.

"I witnessed some really great putts made by a couple girls, and I saw some smart club choices as well," Jamestown coach Tracy Gustafson said of the Blue Jays. "Riverwood can be challenging due to all of the trees, narrow fairways and longer grass areas, but for the most part the girls managed to stay out of trouble."

Alyssa Zachrison turned in a 94 for the Jays. Cora Wolsky and Lauryn Hibl filled in the remainder of the team card at 101 and 105, respectively.

"We could have improved our approach shots, and been more accurate with our chipping and pitch shots," Gustafson said. "In practice we've been working on choosing landing zones or a specific target to let the ball land and then roll out. We still need time to perfect this and gain awareness of this when out on the golf course, but it's coming along."

Bismarck Century eighth graders Leah Herbel and Hannah Herbel led the winning team with identical 3-over-par 75s after 18 holes. Leah defeated her twin sister in a two-hole playoff for medalist honors.

The Madan Invitational at Prairie West Golf Course is up next for the Jays on Sept. 18. Jamestown hosts both the WDA meet (Sept. 24) and the Class A state meet (Oct. 1-2) at Jamestown Country Club.

“We've been fortunate to have had really nice weather, which is great," Gustafson said. "Soon the leaves will be falling and that poses more of a challenge when trying to find golf balls on the course. We're excited to have a few days off to get things back in order and prepare ourselves for Mandan next week."
