Jimmie volleyball sweeps Lancers in Yankton
University of Jamestown head volleyball coach Jon Hegerle was interested to see how his players would respond for a conference match after spending over five hours on a bus Tuesday.
The Jimmies swept Mount Marty 25-19, 25-14, 25-16 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play in Yankton, S.D. Jamestown hit .287 as a team, led by Kennedy Conzemius' 10 kills, but Hegerle said sometimes solid stats can be deceiving.
"It wasn't very crisp," Hegerle said. "After a five-and a-half hour ride, getting off the bus and having to get out there and play. It was nice to get a victory, but I don't think we felt very good about how we performed."
Unforced errors might have hurt the Jimmies' final set scores, but it didn't deplete the ultimate bottom line. Britta Knudson and Anna Holen each added six kills for the Jimmies, while the setting combination of Miranda Lowman (21 assists) and Jackie Meiklejohn (10) provided a bulk of the offensive help. Lowman also finished with four ace serves and Julina Niemeier led the back row with 21 digs.
The Jimmies trailed in both set 1 and set 2, but the Lancers suffered a blow in the second frame. Senior Maura Lysne, a libero and four-year starter for Mount Marty, exited the match with a knee injury.
"Their libero went down and they really struggled after that," Hegerle said. "I thought we competed well, we just weren't very sharp and it took us awhile to get going."
The Jimmies improved to 9-1 overall and are undefeated in the GPAC at 2-0. They'll host Briar Cliff (Iowa) this Thursday, Sept. 13 and 16th-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) on Saturday at Harold Newman Arena.
"We'll need to try to control the tempo of play," Hegerle said. "We just really have to play at a high level and limit our errors."
