Randy was born in Jamestown, ND and raised in Pettibone, ND on the family farm. He attended Pettibone Public school in his elementary and High school years, graduating in 1975. Together they had 4 children, Carissa, Brandon, Brittany, and Jordan. They continued to reside in Pettibone. In 1988 they purchased his own truck and started Randy Tripp Trucking which he owned and operated until his passing. In October of 2009, Randy was united into marriage with LeAnn Fettig (Bursau).

Randy enjoyed deer hunting, Ice fishing, working in the shop, driving around the countryside, and watching old episodes of Bonanza and Gunsmoke. Randy could be a man of few words, and other days was a man of many words and enjoyed having long talks on the phone with his children and grandchildren.
