John Manley

John L. Manley, age 90, of Carrington, ND, formerly of Pingree, ND, died Monday, November 23, 2020, at Golden Acres Manor, Carrington, of COVID-19. John Leslie Manley, was born January 26, 1930, in Woodworth, ND, to Wayne and Mabel (Greenlund) Manley.

His family lived on different farm sites and went to rural school in Pipestem Valley and Roundtop. Later receiving his 8th grade diploma from Pingree School in 1944. In March of 1949, he joined the Navy serving two years. On September 20, 1955, John was united in marriage to Shirley M. Schlesser in Arcadia, WI.

They farmed there until 1963, before moving back to the family farm west of Pingree, ND. Together they were blessed with 8 children. In 1985, John and Shirley moved to Carrington, ND. John worked various farm jobs and for the Red River Valley Railroad. Meanwhile, Shirley worked as a nurse.

Shirley died October, 14, 2002. John was united in marriage on November 5, 2008, to Carol Brown in Carrington, ND.

In 2017, John entered assisted living and later Golden Acres Manor nursing home in Carrington until his death.

John was the oldest of four children, he farmed and ranched his whole life. John was of an era that had seen a lot of changes in life as well as in farming. At a young age, he hauled bundles with teams of horses for thrashing machines.

John and Shirley had 8 children, but rarely was there only 8 for suppers and overnights. Their home was a gathering place for many neighbor kids. John and Shirley were great role models for their children growing up on the farm. John loved his children and grandchildren as well as Carols’ family as he always thought of them as his own.

John enjoyed collecting old tractors, fishing, and riding bike. John served on many boards throughout his life. Johns’ Christian faith was an important part of his life. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church of Pingree for many years, and later a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Carrington, ND.

John is survived by his children, Mike Manley, Mitchell, NE, Betty (Duane) Price of Center, ND, Mary (Andy) Anderson of Jamestown, ND, Steve (Robbin) Manley of Jamestown, ND, Faith (Ron) Nord of Adams, ND. Daughter-in-law, Marge (Pat) McFadden, Fergus Falls, MN. Son-in-law, Ken Wolf, Las Vegas, NV. 26 Grandchildren and 37 Great-Grandchildren. A brother, Harold (Joanne) Manley of Arcadia, WI; a sister, Nora Moran of Jamestown, ND; and a sister-in-law, Bev Manley of Carrington, ND.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Shirley; and his second wife, Carol Brown; a son, Tom Manley; two daughters, Julie Molgard and Kathy Wolf; grandchildren, Jessie Manley Danielson and George Manley. A brother, Lee Manley; and brother-in-law, Bob Moran.

His Private Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, November 27, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carrington.

His Burial will be at the Pingree Cemetery, Pingree, ND.
