Mary A. (Buchanan) Twomey
Mary A. (Buchanan) Twomey died on October 11, 2020 at the age of 89 in Toronto, Ontario where she made her family home for many years.
She was born in Cuyuna, MN on January 29, 1931, to Mark A. and Esther Buchanan. The family later moved to Jamestown, ND, Esther’s hometown, where she grew up and attended school.
Mary graduated from St. John’s Academy and received a B.A. degree in music from Jamestown College in 1951 at the age 20. Her talent in music, particularly vocal, was evident from an early age. While at Jamestown College she excelled in vocal performances and was called “the girl with the golden voice.“ Mary and her younger sister and brother also appeared together in a college production of Thornton Wilder’s classic play “Our Town,” an unusual casting to be sure.
She taught grade school music at Hankinson and Williston, ND for several years. Years later she was invited to a class reunion at Hankinson where she was the guest of honor of many of her former pupils.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, John E. Twomey, daughter Sarah, and sons John (Laurie) and Chris, granddaughters Carlin and Meghan Twomey, brother Dan Buchanan (Francoise), Jamestown, ND and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents and sister Margaret “Peg” Guyer (Bob), Beverly MA.
