Evelyn Maurine Claflin, Jamestown, MD formerly of Diamondhead Community near Hot Springs, Arkansas passed away on September 27, 2020 at the age of 87. She was born February 12, 1933 in Watertown, SD to Floyd and Evelyn Lewis (Stemwedel).
Maurine graduated from Rapid City High School and Northern State Teachers College, Aberdeen, SD in 1955. She and Joe were married in June 1955. Her career in teaching included Elementary Education in Watertown, SD and Special Education in Sioux City, IA while raising five children.
Maurine’s faith was the cornerstone of her commitment to her church. She shared her talents by playing the organ and piano and directing both youth and adult choirs. Maurine was inducted into “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities” as a result of her involvement in music and teaching.
She left the world a better place through the hearts and minds of those who listened, performed and studied with her.
Maurine is survived by her husband of 65 years, W. Joseph “Joe”, and five children, Craig (Beverly), Edina, MN, Caryn, Jamestown, ND, Colleen Fettig (Kevin), Courtney, Orinda, CA, Cyle (Kate), Urbandale, IA; 8 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Janet Kretchman and Sharon Pitkin; and her brother, Maurice Lewis.
