The Jamestown Sun hands out these bravos and buffalo chips this week:
› Bravo to the Jamestown Fine Arts Association, which received the Flint Firestarter Award for Tourism Development Project. The state award, presented by Gov. Doug Burgum last week, was for the Arts Center’s Hansen Arts Park in downtown Jamestown. The award recognized the association for being “a catalyst for development and growth of Jamestown’s downtown.”
› Buffalo chip to the driver in a hit-and-run accident on April 10 that damaged a control box for the traffic signal at 10th Street and 7th Avenue Southeast in Jamestown and left the city with the estimated $16,000 repair bill. Stop signs have been posted for traffic at the intersection until the control box can be repaired.
› Bravo to bids coming in lower than expected for two road projects in the city. The bids for the road between the Menards area and Jamestown Regional Medical Center and the road for the Two Rivers Activity Center came in at $2.1 million and $1.8 million, respectively. The estimates were $3 million and $2.4 million, respectively. The bids submitted by Border States Paving are under review and expected to be awarded at the May 1 City Council meeting.
› Buffalo chip to the reduction in funding for fire departments in North Dakota. The departments receive money from a 1.75 percent tax on fire and casualty property insurance sold in the state. The North Dakota Legislature approved reducing payments to the fire departments by 5 percent and leaving the rest of the money in the general fund. While the reduction is expected to total $28,000 in the next biennium, fire department chiefs from Jamestown say what seems like a small amount of money is in fact a great deal to fire department operations.
