Anew program that elevates the presence of fathers in one Jamestown school is a promising idea that can have benefits beyond a dad and his child.
Jamestown Public School Board members, staff and volunteers of Louis L’Amour Elementary School are adapting the WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) initiative of the National Center for Fathering to engage fathers, stepfathers and grandfathers at school as volunteers with the kids.
As volunteers the men can interact with their children for two hours at lunch and in the classroom. In addition, the dads interact with other children as volunteer greeters, playground supervisors or in other capacities such as hallways and the lunchroom.
The regular interaction with children can create positive experiences that benefit learning and help parents and kids better connect when talking about school at home. The long-term impact could mean better grades, fewer dropouts and more successful adults.
Several dads said at the program’s kickoff launch last week that they would volunteer at least once a semester and believe their presence at the school can make a difference for the children. If successful, the organizers say the program could be expanded to other schools.
Robert Lech, superintendent of Jamestown Public School District, concurred with WATCH D.O.G.S. as a way to engage and improve parentchild, mentor-child relationships to find an important connection between home and school success.
It sounds like a program that can have a positive impact on adults and children. Kudos to the men who are volunteering to be part of a program.
