On Monday parts of Jamestown will be filled with trick-or-treaters as children flock from door to door in search of their ultimate Halloween prize: free candy. It is important to keep safety in mind during the festivities.
Adults should accompany younger children at all times. Parents of older children who are out on their own should know the routes their children will take during the course of the evening.
Reflective tape should be affixed to dark costumes to make children visible in the dark. Trick-or-treaters should also carry flashlights in case they go through a dark area or unlighted street.
The North Dakota Department of Health advises parents to make sure costumes fit so children won't trip on them and to purchase flame-resistant costumes for an evening spent roaming neighborhoods.
Remember to have children use sidewalks and not walk in the street. Motorists should be on the lookout for any children that do venture into the street or who use crosswalks.

Motorists also need to drive slowly and use heightened caution when driving.
The health department also recommends parents check all candy before a child eats it. Discard any candy that looks like it was tampered with and any baked goods as well.
As for the rest of the candy, health experts recommend eating it in moderation or giving it away in exchange for a new toy or special trip.
By following these simple steps, children and adults in the area can have healthy, safe and fun Halloween.
Several community groups have also planned Halloween activities. Those include Buffalo Mall, Frontier Village, First Assembly of God, Youth for Christ, Trinity Lutheran Church and Victory Lutheran Church.
However you celebrate Halloween, do it safely.
