Community makes a difference for Dollars for Scholars

JSSP Letter to Editor

By Robert Toso, DeAnn Ament, Rob Lech, Casey Stoudt | all Jamestown

In this season of thanksgiving, the Jamestown Dollars for Scholars (JDFS) would like to thank the community for their continued support. From the Shoe Drive to the recent Pizza Ranch dining fundraiser and all the events in between (membership drive, game sponsors for Blue Jays athletics, Applebee’s dining fundraiser), the community continues to show up and support Jamestown High School graduating seniors pursuit of a post-secondary education.

In the last five years, the JDFS has increased the number of scholarships awarded by 13 bringing the total to 33 in 2019. Since 2006-2007, approximately $224,000 has been provided to JHS students. The current fund balance of the scholarship and endowment fund is nearly $483,021. Additionally, the board has diligently worked to increase the name recognition of the organization in the community.

As with any organization, we are always looking for more people willing to make a difference. There are many different ways to be involved in Dollars for Scholars. The committee welcomes individuals willing to serve as board members, committee members and/or volunteers for various activities. This support often directly impacts the number of scholarships Dollars for Scholars is able to offer to graduating seniors. If you have interest in supporting, please reach out to of the Dollars for Scholars board members.

Additionally, there are opportunities to support Dollars for Scholars in gifts that support the scholarship fund. Patrons who have committed funds through endowments and pass-through scholarships have expressed to us that it is a wonderful legacy to provide opportunities to students in the name or in the spirit of a loved one. We are blessed to have many of these people share in the announcements of scholarship winners at the awards ceremony held each May.

We are grateful for our supportive community and appreciate the donations of shoes, time and contributions. Wishing you and those dear to you a Happy Thanksgiving!

The letter writers are officers of the Jamestown Dollars for Scholars. Toso is president, Ament is vice president, Lech is treasurer and Stoudt is secretary. The letter was also signed by 12 board and ex-officio members.
