Minot's Bollinger signs with Phillies

MINOT (AP) -- Minot baseball standout Ryan Bollinger has decided to forgo a college career for a more immediate shot at the major leagues.

The left-hander has signed a seven-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. He will start his career with the Gulf Coast League Phillies, a rookie-level affiliate.

Bollinger was drafted as a first baseman by the Phillies in the 47th round earlier this year. He was the 1,427th pick. He also pitches, and says he might play some outfield.

He had been planning on playing ball for Iowa Western University in the fall, but says he changed his mind after consulting with family and coaches.
