Jimmies sweep Comets

There haven’t been many chinks in the armor for the Jimmie volleyball team this season.

One improvement head coach Jon Hegerle wanted is better blocking and he got it Saturday night.

The 20th-ranked Jimmies (15-4) had 20 block assists and three solos in a 3-0 road sweep of Mayville State.

“We worked a ton on (blocking) in practice this week because I feel like we should be better at blocking,” Hegerle said. “Coach (Kelsey) Titus was working on it with the girls every day, so it was nice to see us carry that over into the match.”

The win all but cemented another conference title for the Jimmies. There was never much doubt, but now at 7-0 in North Star Athletic Association play, clinching is a mere formality.

The 3-0 win over the Comets was not as easy as it appeared, Hegerle said.

After dominating the first set (25-15), the Jimmies were down eight in the second before rallying.

“They’re a good team with a little different style based on their strengths,” Hegerle said of the Comets. “They competed really hard. I thought it was a pretty good match.”

Back-row stalwarts Amanda Kramer (12 digs) and Nicole Warren (10 digs) again drew high marks from the coach. So did Heather Bachman, who totaled seven kills and six blocks.

Alaina Brown (11 kills) and Kaitlin Anderson (9) led a balanced attack. Kaia Buck passed out 21 assists.

“The sets were pretty spread around to a lot of hitters,” Hegerle said.

The Jimmies have a big weekend ahead in Des Moines, Iowa, where they’ll face No. 22 Grand View, Iowa, No. 7 Viterbo, Wisc., 16th-ranked Evangel, Mo., and Baker, Kan. (receiving votes).

“It’s stiff competition, but that’s why we go down there,” Hegerle said. “It’s midterm week for our players so they’re generally gassed from taking or making up (tests). It’s quite a challenge. It will be interesting to see how we play.”
