Valley City State University used two big innings Friday to take two of three from 16th-ranked University of Jamestown in women's softball.

Jimmie starter Jasmine Pipella was pulled after two outs as the Vikings used a six-run, six-hit first inning to set the tone early at the Presentation Dome in Aberdeen, S.D.

"She said 'I only missed one spot during that barrage of runs,'" said Jimmie softball coach Kevin Gall. "We didn't pick it up and get to where we needed to be."

Jamestown scored five runs in the second frame to get back into the ballgame, but Valley City scored three in the sixth to hang on for the 10-7 win.

Valley City broke open a 2-1 Jimmie lead with a five-run fourth to earn a 6-3 victory in game 2. Jamestown stranded 10 runners in the loss.

Pipella rebounded much better in the final game of the tripleheader. The freshman pitched a one-run, five-hit complete game to earn a 3-1 victory.

"She's a nice young pitcher and not lacking of confidence," Gall said, after Pipella didn't make it out of the first inning of game 1. "When she gets the ball she'll do her best."

The Jimmies' sophomore shortstop Mikayla Frost impressed at the plate, recording four extra-base hits (three doubles and a home run) in a 5-for-11 effort.

"She had a phenomenal first game and had a good at-bat every time," Gall said. "I got to say hats off to her."

Jamestown and Valley City are now tied for first-place in the North Star Athletic Association standings at 8-3. Waldorf is half-game back at 8-4.

The Jimmies will now head to Mount Marty College (S.D.) for a doubleheader April 4. Jamestown's first tentatively-scheduled home games will be against Dakota State two days later.
