Jamestown High School's collective effort on the floor Tuesday, Dec. 11, led the Blue Jays to a dual victory at Jamestown Gymnastics Club. But head coach Dave Tews said it could have been even better.

The Jays' floor exercise scored 34.75 points, en route to helping JHS defeat visiting Aberdeen, S.D., 133.950 to 133.450.

"Eighth-grader Emma Hillerud definitely came through for us tonight, and if she wouldn't have fallen on floor she'd have had one of our top floor scores too," Tews said. "We didn't perform real well today. It was a typical Tuesday meet."

Hillerud finished second on beam (8.9), fourth on the uneven bars (7.650), sixth on vault (8.2) and 11th on the floor (8.0), helping support veterans Haley Nelson and Rachel Schiele. Nelson, a freshman, and Schiele, a sophomore, finished 1-2 in the all-around at 35.20 and 33.25, respectively.

Hillerud was fourth overall in the all-around at 32.750. Schiele won bars with an 8.8.

"Our top three in the all-around were down just a hair," Tews said. "Rachel tried a different vault and it just didn't work. Haley was down (overall) about a point and a half; Rachel was down maybe two and a half."

Finding depth will be a work in progress for Jamestown this winter. But after scoring an initial 130.50 to start the season on Nov. 29, Jamestown soared to a 138.00 and placed third at the five-team Dickinson Invite last Friday, Dec. 7.

The Blue Jays received three scores in the 9s on vault in Dickinson, with Nelson (9.325), Schiele (9.125) and junior Courtney Mack (9.0) leading the way. Schiele also went 9.5 on floor and 9.2 on bars, while Nelson scored 9.525 on beam and 9.225 on floor, as Jameston finished roughly 10 points back of first-place Dickinson at 148.575.

"Today we scored a 133.95 and I thought the judging was kind of tough," Tews said. "But the potential is there. We just need to have a couple of these other kids begin to pick up the slack."

The Blue Jays will be in Fargo on Friday for a six-team invite at American Gold Gymnastics.
