Jamestown High School boys swimmer Cole Rasmusson couldn't have had a better start to his senior season.

Rasmusson finished 12th at the Fargo Davies Pentathlon on Saturday, Dec. 8, while qualifying for state in the 500-yard freestyle and 200 free. The senior improved on both state qualifying times Thursday evening and won both events at the JHS Pool, but the Blue Jays fell to West Fargo 104-81.

"This year has been a great so far," Rasmusson said. "The team really helps me out by cheering on the sidelines."

Rasmusson first competed in the 200 free-the second event of the day-where he swam a 1 minute, 59.70 second time, to win the event over West Fargo's Kasey Chase by three seconds. The time was a five second improvement from Saturday.

"Cole beat his time from last weekend in the 200 freestyle," said Jamestown coach Ben Smith. "It's really cool because it hasn't even been a full week of competition yet."

Rasmusson would go on to race in the 500 free six events later, where he'd swim a 5:26.07 and beat the Packers' Max Wohl by 13 seconds. Rasmusson owns a 5:12.21 personal record in the 500 free and hopes to build off it this season.

"I'm a distance swimmer, so my goal is to get the record (4:57)," Rasmusson said. "I like how distance swimming isn't about sprinting. You spread it out, have a nice long swim and have a good time."

Sophomore Noah Haglund has also had a breakout year for the Jays, after finishing 10th in Saturday's pentathlon with 30 points. Haglund has qualified for the 50 freestyle, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 100 backstroke and 200 medley.

"My year has been going pretty well," Haglund said. "I started out a little rough in the preseason, but coach Ben (Smith) helped me at the beginning of the season and that really helped. It helped in the first meet as I was close to personal records."

Haglund qualified for state in two events Thursday, including the 200 medley (2:17.63) and 100 backstroke (59.86).

"He worked really hard during the offseason this year and he has some lofty goals," Smith said. "We're really excited for him and a lot of our athletes."

Jamestown diving took the top four spots during the West Fargo dual. Senior Gage Poland took first place with a person-best score of 194.7, followed by senior Jameson Holgerson (170.4), junior Cameron Winstead (166.75) and eighth-grader Jaron Coombs (154.2).

"They're really good together and encourage each other," Smith said. "They do a good job of helping each other out, but also helping other athletes out from other schools."

Other state qualifiers from Thursday's meet include: senior Luca Flann (50 freestyle, 100 free) and sophomore Garret Wright (100 butterfly).

Jamestown will head to the Fargo North Pentathlon on Saturday. The Blue Jays finished third at the Davies' pentathlon.

"I feel like we'll get about the same with our team or maybe have the potential to get second," Haglund said.
