The Blue Jay gymnastics team took another step forward Friday, Jan. 4, hosting the KC Invite at the Jamestown Gymnastics Club.
The home team would've scored its best mark of the year, had it not been penalized on beam. Jamestown won the four-team invite with a team score of 137.375.
"We goofed up a little bit. We competed out of order on beam and we lost a point," said JHS gymnastics coach Dave Tews. "Nothing big, just one of those things that happen."
Jamestown's best score of the season, 138.00, came at the Dickinson Invite on Dec. 7. But even with the 1-point deduction Friday, Tews was pleased with his team's overall performance.
The Jays were the class of the field on floor (35.50) beam (34.425) and bars (32.90), finishing ahead of second-place finisher Valley City by more than 5 points.
Jamestown freshman Haley Nelson finished 1-1-1-2 on beam (9.225), floor (9.625), bars (8.75) and vault (9.1), respectively, running away with the top all-around score of 36.70. Sophomore teammate Rachel Schiele was second at 35.425, placing second on floor (9.2) and bars (8.5), and tying for the second spot with Nelson on vault at 9.1.
"Overall the kids did really well," Tews said. "Not necessarily our top performers had their best meet, but our 3 and 4 scores were up there a little bit."
Junior Courtney Mack placed fifth overall on beam (8.575), sixth on vault (8.85) and 10th on floor (8.425). Eighth-grader Emma Hillerud went sixth on bars (7.95), eighth on vault (8.5) and 11th on floor (8.25), and eighth-grader Blair Arbuckle scored for the Jays on bars (7.7) and beam (8.0).
"Good things happened," Tews said. "They stayed on the beam when they should and executed the stuff they needed to. Overall I think it was probably our best meet."
The competition clicks up a notch for Jamestown on Jan. 11 in Bismarck, when the Blue Jays travel to partake in the Julie Ziegler Meet at the Bismarck Gymnastics Academy.
"I always consider that meet one of the tougher ones. If you have depth it's a great meet to go to," Tews said. "It's not the state championships, but you have to start figuring out what your lineup will be. How you place at that it probably a little bit more of an indication of where you're at then your score is."
