Jamestown High School gymnastics coach Dave Tews said the Blue Jays had their best meet of the year Saturday at Jamestown Gymnastics Club.
The Jays earned first place hosting the Jamestown Winter Classic with a score of 141.4, while Grand Forks-one of the Blue Jays' closest rivals of late-scored a 139. Wahpeton followed in third place (126.750) and Valley City was fourth (111.8).
"It was actually our best meet of the year," Tews said. " We beat Grand Forks and everything went right for us today. Grand Forks stumbled and struggled a little bit, too. It was a very good day, a lot of kids tried new things and had success doing it."
Grand Forks had posted better finishes than Jamestown in three events this year, including a 140.80-136.70 dual victory on Dec. 21.
"When it came to announcing scores, the kids were pretty happy, and someone did the math before the results went out I think," Tews said. "It was a really good day."
The Blue Jays' Haley Nelson took first in the all-around with a score of 37. The freshman took first in the bars (9.2) and second in the vault (9.3), beam (9) and floor (9.5).
Sophomore Rachel Schiele was second in the all-around with a 36.650. Schiele took first on beam (9.2), while placing top four in all other events.
Tews said the biggest surprise was Brenna Hatch, who took third on beam (8.950) and seventh on the floor (9).
"The surprise of the day was Hatch, who scored 8.950 in beam and 9 on floor," Tews said. "For a girl we thought we'd be losing for the year with an arm injury, sure helped our depth today."
Jamestown travels to Minot's Gymagic Center on Feb. 1 for regionals. The Blue Jays host Fargo, Fargo Davies and Grand Forks in another meet on Feb. 7.
"If we could keep this jump and stay in the high 130s consistently would be good," Tews said. "Next week we go to Minot and all the good girls are there. We'll see if we can stay with them."
