Perhaps the most poignant moment in the history of Jamestown High School gymnastics unfolded last February at Jerry Meyer Arena, when defending state champion Rachel Schiele fell from the balance beam.

With tears in her eyes, Schiele, then just a freshman, somehow climbed back on the four-inch-wide apparatus and finished her routine, destined to lose her quest as repeat beam champion in front of family and friends.

The pain of that afternoon fully evaporated for Schiele back at Jamestown's Jerry Meyer Arena on Saturday, Feb. 23. Not only did the sophomore surprise as state uneven bars champion during the individual portion of the state gymnastics meet, moments later she was able to cheer on teammate Haley Nelson to a state title on beam.

In that moment, the only two girls in the last 47 years to have won individual state gymnastics titles for JHS were standing in the same room.

"I was super proud of her," Schiele said of Nelson's 9.467 winning performance. "When she was going on the beam, I was squeezing people's hands so that she would stay on there.

"I just really wanted her to do good."

Nelson, the West Region bars champion, liked her chances better on either bars or in the floor exercise, where she entered tied with the state's top mark of 9.8. Nelson, however, placed eighth on the floor (9.45) and finished just outside the top 10 on bars at 8.833.

"I did not expect to win beam," said Nelson, who was ranked fourth in the state on both beam and bars, and was also battling a sore left ankle Saturday. "Beam is not my strongest event, for sure. It was just really surprising."

Schiele put together her best bars routine of the season at the right time. Ranked seventh in the event entering competition, Schiele bested her previous top mark by over a tenth-and a-half scoring 9.367.

Schiele also scored season bests on floor (9.567) and beam (9.167), placing fourth and fifth, respectively, in those events.

"Usually when I do my bail, I like, tap the floor, so then I get deducted for that," Schiele explained of her bars routine. "And today I didn't tap, which was really surprising."

Jamestown coach Dave Tews wasn't shocked with the championship scores put up by the Blue Jays' dynamic duo, but he was forced to do a double take when looking at the all-around marks. Schiele placed third in the all-around at 37.051 with Nelson right behind in fourth at 37.050. Nelson's 9.3 on vault was good enough for ninth.

"Scores, not shocked. State champions? Yes," Tews said. "Mildly shocked, let's say. But probably what's more impressive than the scores for the state championships are the scores in the all-around. We've never had two kids score over 37 in an all-around in a season, much less in a meet."

Dickinson junior Ayanna Fossum three-peated as floor champion (9.683), en route to capturing the all-around (37.917). Fossum also left Jamestown as the state vault champion (9.567).

After Schiele's beam title in 2017, one has to traverse the record book all the way back to 1972 to find Jamestown's last individual state champion: Kathy Sullivan (bars, beam and floor).

Jamestown placed third in the state team competition for a second straight year Friday with a season-high 142.134. A somewhat surprising finish for a team that didn't return a handful of scorers, including two seniors.

But athletes such as junior Courtney Mack, and eighth-graders Brenna Hatch and Emma Hillerud, rose to the occasion. Hatch scored a 9.033 on floor and an 8.550 on beam Saturday, while Mack's top vault on day 2 rang in at 8.867.

"Our first meet was our lowest score, and the last week of the year we had our highest one. So, that's as good as it can get," Tews said. "Brenna coming on at the end of the year was huge for us. It put a high 8, or a low 9, on beam and floor all the time for us when we were using 7.5s before."

The level of across-the-board improvement made throughout the season by Jamestown couldn't have been predicted. Tews was concerned the Jays might score less than 130 out of the gate this winter, which made his athletes angry.

"Very angry," grinned Nelson, with Tews within earshot. "He underestimated us."

"Some dummy said 130," Tews retorted with an eye roll. "That was the goal at the beginning of the year."
