COLUMBIA, Mo. - Valley City State's softball team is heading to the NAIA Softball World Series.
With Wednesday's 7-2 win over Columbia (Mo.) College, Valley City State claimed the championship of the NAIA Opening-Round Tournament. The Vikings will take a 54-3 record and a 21-game winning streak to the NAIA World Series to be held May 23-29 in Springfield, Mo.
Emilee Wilson, a freshman from Esko, Minn., pitched a three-hitter for the Vikings allowing only two earned runs while striking out four in seven innings.
"Unbelievable. Maybe in shock a little bit, proud of the kids and the effort they put in all season, all the kids that came before them to make this happen," Vikings coach Mike Mook told WDAY on Wednesday. "Coming in I thought winning our first two games, I thought we had a good shot of winning it all."
Voni Culp, a senior from Sacramento, Calif., went 2-for-4 with two runs for the Vikings. Emily Smith, a junior from Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, had two RBI. Riley Perryman, a freshman from Cottage Grove, Minn., had a double and a triple driving in two runs and scoring twice. Kadie Anderson, a senior from Jamestown, N.D., went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
