A four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth by Valley City State was the difference as the Vikings defeated the University of Jamestown baseball team Sunday afternoon by a score of 4-3.

The game was scoreless through six innings, and the Jimmies were without a hit until the top of the seventh.

Pinch-hitter Jose Leon reached on an error and Blake Arritolacame on to run for him. Tayler Cullen connected on a two-run home run to center field, giving UJ a 2-0 lead. Julian Sansores followed with a single and moved to second on a Kendall Yackley sacrifice bunt.

One out later, Bauer Sewell singled to left to bring home Sansores and make it a 3-0 game.

VCSU started its rally in the bottom of the eighth against Jimmie reliever Trey Evans. JT Reed led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. David Demeter reached on an error and advanced to second as Reed scored. After a walk put runners on first and second, Cameron Jenkins (0-1) came on in relief of Evans and was greeted by Drew Nixon with a three-run home run to left field.

Demeter retired the Jimmies in the top of the ninth to earn the save.

Payson Mills started for Jamestown and allowed two hits over four scoreless innings, walking two and striking out four. Ethan Krupp pitched two innings, striking out two and scattering three hits.

The Jimmies travel to Dickinson State University on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.

Cross Country sees first action of season Friday

MOORHEAD, Minn.-- The University of Jamestown men's cross country team competed in its first meet of the season Friday, finishing ninth at the Dragon Twilight, hosted by Minnesota State University-Moorhead.

Drew Hjelmstad was the top finisher for UJ, running the 6K course in 20 minutes, 35.4 seconds. Kadin Neppl was the Jimmies' second finisher in a time of 22:04.5.

Noah Mang (22:12.9), Micah Hoke (22:21.0), and David Martin (22:26.5) rounded out the Jamestown top five.

Ethan Sherva (22:36.1), Corbin Cornelius (24:22.2), Lorenzo Maldonado (25:34.4), and Jacob Juelfs (28:31.8) comprised the other UJ finishes. The Jimmies will be at the Shane Grever Invitational in Dickinson, N.D., on September 24.

Paige Erbstoesser was the first Jimmie women's runner to cross the line, finishing the 4K race in 17 minutes, 19.8 seconds.

Elise Cummins followed Erbstoesser with a time of 18:18.0, then Silje Kindseth at 18:42.4. Jennifer Tallackson rounded things out for UJ, finishing in 19:47.3. It was the first collegiate race for all four runners.

Taylor Hestekin of the University of Mary was the top placer, finishing in 14:32.3.
