Saturday was not an ideal day for running but the Jamestown High School cross country team powered through.

"It was a cold, windy, wet day in Dickinson.," JHS head cross country coach Ken Gardner said. "We had lots of 5K PRs. We placed seventh for both teams. I thought we had a shot at a place or two higher on the right day."

The seventh-place Blue Jays turned in scores of 190 for the boys and 203 for the girls. Williston won the WDA meet for both the boys and the girls.

Williston's Ivan Askim won the boys race with a time of 15:48 while Bismarck's Bayla Wiegel picked up top-honors for the girls crossing the line at 18:27.

The young squad of Blue Jays was led by senior Cullen Flieth on the boys' side and middle schoolers Layna Hoffer and Brooklyn Nygaard captained the girls. All three runners placed inside the top-20 to earn individual WDA honors.

"I was glad to see Cullen earn All-WDA as a senior," Gardner said. "Brooklyn was All-WDA for the second consecutive year. And it’s always impressive for a seventh grader to earn All-WDA, so it’s exciting to have Layna make that happen on our girls' team for the second year in a row."

Flieth recorded a season-best time of 17:01 to place 12th out of 82 competitors. Hoffer and Nygaard placed 15th and 18th out of the 86 runners.
