The University of Jamestown women’s basketball team had to hold off a furious comeback attempt by Dickinson State in a 65-58 win. The win sees the Jimmies improve to 1-0 on the season. The loss sees the Blue Hawks drop to 0-1 on the season.

The Jimmies were up 17 points with 7:40 to go in the game before Dickinson instituted a full-court press and put the ball in their shooter’s hot hands that saw them trim the lead. The Jimmies were up by as little as seven points inside the last two minutes.

In the early going of this game, the Jimmies were powered by Hannah Demars who scored 14 of the Jimmies' first 16 points as the Jimmies ran out to a 16-10 lead with 3:16 to go in the first quarter. At the end of the first quarter, the Jimmies were up 16-14. However, The Blue Hawks went on a 4-0 run starting with 2:49 to go in the first quarter to early in the second quarter.

Hannah Labree for the Blue Hawks hit clutch shots to give them their first lead of the game, as two shots from beyond the arc, gave Dickinson the 20-16 lead with 9:07 to go in the second quarter leading to Jimmies head coach Thad Sankey calling a timeout. The Jimmies ended the run with 8 minutes to go in the second quarter as Madelyn Schmidt splashed a three to make the game 20-19 in favor of the Blue Hawks. The Jimmies retook the lead when Demars hit a layup, to push the Jimmies out in front, 21-20 with 6:30 to go in the first half. However, the lead would be short-lived as the Blue Hawks hit a three to go up 23-21. The Jimmies would go on a run of their own as Demars hit a reverse layup to put the Jimmies up 27-23 with a little over five minutes to go.

The teams would battle it out over the last five minutes with the JImmies going into the halftime break up 35-34.

Jimmies hit their first bucket of the second half as Jailyn Martinson hit a layup with 8:12 to go. The Jimmies bench erupted as Macy Savela hit the bucket and was fouled 3:06 to go in the third quarter. The Jimmies outscored the Blue Hawks 16-3 in the third quarter.

“I thought our starting group got us off to a good start in the third quarter and then that next group of subs kept it going,” Jimmies head coach Thad Sankey said. “It helped us extend it and continued our stops.”

The Jimmies attempted to pull away late as Hannah Demars split the defense and drove in and hit the layup to make the game 63-47 with 2:44 to go in the fourth quarter.

The Jimmies turned the ball over with 2:02 to go and the crowd for Dickinson started to get some hope back that a comeback was possible. Dickinson stole the ball on the other end and Lauren Baumberger responded by hitting a bucket to bring the game to within 10 points. With 43.4 seconds to go, Kia Tower got called for the foul underneath the bucket, the ensuing free throws were split as Dickinson brought it to a 9 point game.

The Jimmies are back in action at 5 p.m. on Oct. 23 when they host Mayville State at Newman Arena. The Blue Hawks are back in action at 2 p.m. on Oct 23 when they host Minot State.
