BISMARCK -- Jamestown High School's Annie Nabwe hadn't picked up a discus until this spring.
Now, two and a half months later, she is the reigning Class A state champion in the event.
"It feels great because this is my first year doing discus," Nabwe said. "I am just grateful to those who pushed me -- my friends, people on other teams and my coaches. It was awesome."
Nabwe claimed the Blue Jays' first state title of the weekend during day 1 of the Class A state track and field meet at the MDU Resources Community Bowl. Nabwe's throw, which was a new Blue Jay record at 143 feet, 9 inches, cleared second-place winner Jenna Hardy's throw by more than 13 feet.
Nabwe and the Blue Jay girls sit second in the team standings after five events with 26 points -- just two points behind meet leader Bismarck Century. The Blue Jay boys sit fourth at 12 points, behind Century at 82.

Day 2 begins tomorrow morning at 8:45 a.m.
"It was a great start to the weekend," JHS co-head coach Ken Gardner said. "For the most part we are accomplishing the goals that we set out for ourselves, maybe one or two athletes who didn't quite get to where they wanted but still great efforts."

While some Blue Jays might be looking for a better performance tomorrow, Nabwe is just looking to continue her dominant streak.
The junior is slated to compete in the shot put, javelin and 100-meter dash. Nabwe is the heavy favorite in the shot -- as she has consistently eclipsed her competition's throws by more than six feet. The standout sprinter is ranked second in the 100, while her younger sister, Yolanda, is seeded third.
"She's a talented young lady and I think the sky is the limit for her," Gardner said. "There is just so much untapped potential there and it's nice that she's only a junior and she can keep developing."
Cece Deebom, a sophomore out of Fargo Davies, is ranked No. 1 in the 100, having run an 11.92-second race in Friday's prelims.

"I am hoping that I can beat Cece in the 100," Nabwe said. "I am going to try my best, I think I can do it."
Trying their best is how several other Blue Jays wound up on the podium Friday.

Thomas Allmer earned second-place in the Class A boys discus with a throw of 157-09, while Devin Beach reached the podium placing eighth in the triple jump (42-3.5).
Hunter Petersen made her mark in the high jump. The recent team addition set a new personal record, clearing the bar at 5 feet, 1 inch, good enough to place third.
A surprise came in the boys' 4x100 meter relay for the Jays.
Jamestown not only qualified for tomorrow's finals but also broke a 51-year-old school record. The foursome comprised of Levi Korum, Beach, Preston Kroeber and Brode Hillstrom finished the lap in 43.97 seconds.

"It's nice to be back at the state meet," Gardner said. "It's been too long."
