Jimmies split with Crusaders

Jimmie baseball suffered its first loss of the season Friday, March 2, in Springfield, Mo.

The bats were quiet for University of Jamestown in a 3-2 loss at Evangel University. But the Jimmies responded, winning the second game of a four-game weekend series 8-2 against the Crusaders.

The Jimmies and the Crusaders play a second twinbill Saturday starting at noon.

"We were able to get guys on, get them over and get them in, in game 2," said University of Jamestown head coach Tom Hager. "In game 1 we struggled with getting them in."

The Jimmies were limited to just three hits in the opener, but a Tyler Ludlow RBI double and an RBI sacrifice fly by Kaleb Binstock had the Jimmies leading 3-2 through six innings. The Crusaders, however, walked the game off in the seventh.

Jimmie starter Jerome Byndloss—looking for the complete-game win—gave up a pair of walks in the inning before giving way to Eric Evans. Evans recorded the first two outs with the two runners on, but the senior righty couldn't sit down Evangel sophomore and lead-off batter Patrick Gaul.

Gaul doubled to left-center to plate the go-ahead runs.

"We had two quality starts today with Byndloss and (Joe) Spradlin, and our bullpen did a nice job too," Hager said.

Spradlin allowed one earned run through the first 3 2/3 innings of game 2. The Jimmies trailed 2-1 before breaking it open with two runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh.

Jaden Yackley's RBI single in the sixth was followed by Ludlow coaxing a bases-loaded walk to hand the Jimmies a 3-2 advantage.

Yackley connected for a second RBI single in the seventh, while Ludlow and Binstock each drove in two with a pair of knocks.

"We're happy with how we were able to come back in game 2 and get a quality win," Hager said. "I like my team. I think we are playing good baseball.

"The true test will be continuing to be consistent. Hopefully we can finish up this road trip strong and end on a good note."
