Jamestown Eagles head coach Sam Joseph is looking for a redo rather than a repeat headed into the 2020 Senior Babe Ruth Baseball Class A West Region Tournament.
"They are ready to go," said Joseph of his 2020 squad. "I know a lot of them still have the bad taste in their mouth from last year when we lost the first round and the second round and not being able to make it to state so they are all hungry and ready to go."
The Eagles will host the 2020 West Region tourney beginning Tuesday at Jack Brown Stadium. Games are slated to begin at noon when the Bismarck Representatives square off against Mandan. The tournament is scheduled to run through Saturday if necessary.
The Eagles will enter the tournament with a record of 14-2 in the West Region. The host team will face Williston (3-13) in Tuesday's final game of the day. The first pitch is scheduled for 25 minutes after the conclusion of game No. 3.
"Last week we went up and played against West Fargo, so we didn't do very well against them but I still like where we are sitting right now," Joseph said. "We were able to face a pretty good team that was able to do some things against us that we hadn't seen all year.
Joseph said the team has made some defensive and offensive adjustments since the matchup with West Fargo to prepare for the four days of competition ahead.
"For this week getting ready for the tournament, we actually brought in a couple of lefties that I know from around town who can throw a little bit," Joseph said. "The other things that we have made adjustments on was our bunt coverages and stuff like that.
"We haven't really needed to run throughout the season because not many teams had to bunt against us (but) we made the adjustments in practice so we are looking good going into Tuesday."
Looking good - particularly at the mound.
"At the beginning of the year we didn't know what we were going to get with pitching," Joseph said. "We had to change our philosophy with pitching because we always had a couple of guys who could come in and kind of set the tone and just do it on their own.
"Now, this year we don't have those kinds of guys who can do that. We had to change our philosophy and the boys have been doing a great job with that. Five pitches or less - that's what we want and they've been doing that. A lot of our outings with Jakob Schempp, Max Anderson and Jacoby Nold - they've been going in and coming out of complete games with 60 pitches or less."
Schempp has pitched 21 innings for the Eagles giving up 11 runs off 16 hits. The soon-to-be Jamestown High School junior has 20 strikeouts on the year. Nold has been on the mound for 11.1 innings giving up six runs off of nine hits. Nold has racked up 15 K's.
With plenty of talent on the mound, at the plate and in the field, Joseph said he has high hopes for his second-seeded Eagles.
"Our guys are pumped - they are always pumped when we play home," Joseph said. "It's an honor having (the tournament) on our home field. We play well at home so it works in our favor."
